vp Employee Spotlight

Yesterday was a special day at vente-privee, as we celebrated the birthday of our VP of Tech, Nic. Everyone knows Nic is a Star Wars fanatic, but nobody knows better than the rest of his tech team. Below, tech team member Gui shares some other fun facts about Nic that not everyone may know.

“Every day there’s a swooshing sound when Nic is ready to leave the office. It’s his red lightsaber. Nic started life with 9 souls, he has 7 souls left. He sold one of his souls to the dark side and got a lightsaber out of it. Don’t ask about the other soul.
Other fun facts about Nic:

  • He doesn’t drink coffee, but he drinks hot chocolates like water.
  • The power supply for his laptop is bigger than a Macbook Pro, and he needs a wheeled cart to transport it.
  • After hours, he frequently blasts Yanni and Beethoven.
  • His favorite sayings are: ‘We are a startup!’ and ‘We do this in real time!’
Amazingly, in the 6 months that I’ve been working here, Nic has always been in good spirits.”

Gui isn’t joking about the lightsaber. Here’s just a sample of Nic’s Star Wars paraphernalia collection.

A few words from the birthday jedi:

Q: If you had a soundtrack to your life what would it be?

I don’t want to pick only one. It would clearly be the entire soundtrack from Back to the Future movie because you have a whole lot of songs that are very appropriate for all episodes of my life.

  • Power of Love
  • Back in Time
  • Heaven is one Step Away
  • Earth Angel
  • Johnny B. Goode
  • And of course the instrumental overture from the moviethat you can sometimes hear at my desk after 7

Q: What do you like most about working at vente-privee?

This adventure is about taking a Business model that I saw working in Europe and make it work in the US in a totally different reality and a totally different timing. Since we are a vital service to brands, we have the certitude that we are going to be there for as long as brands have stock. It’s the unique opportunity to live the startup journey without dealing with the risk of not succeeding. Plus I have this opportunity of making this new business grow from scratch and we actually have a chance to make it better without making the mistakes of our parent companies. The team we have here is incredible and I am honored to be part of it. I have a smaller team than I used to have in France but I have the chance to build it from the ground up and this is what I am the most grateful for.

Q: What do you miss most about your time spent in France?

What I miss the most from my CTO position in France is the firepower I used to have by working with 115 people. 115 people can get a lot of things done, can manage a lot of products and engage in many big projects simultaneously. Our reality as a startup is more about managing priorities which is frustrating to me sometimes.

What I miss the most about France is the fine food, I miss my wine cellar, I miss the cheap Foie Gras I used to put on everything, I miss my cool car that I had to sell. But when I was in France I missed poutine from my Quebec city.

Q: What is your favorite quote?

Darth Vader in Star Wars Episode Four said: “I find your lack of faith disturbing.” That’s my favorite quote in English.

In French my favorite quote is famous but anonymous: La plus grande faillite d’un être humain, c’est de perdre son enthousiasme. S’il sait le conserver, peu importe que tout le reste l’abandonne; le succès le favorisera sûrement de nouveau.

Q: When did your love for Star Wars begin? Are you raising your sons to be fans?

I started to be fan of Star Wars quite late, I was 14 years old, but as soon as I discovered the movies, it became an obsession. I managed to adapt the visioning of the movies so my five year-old Arthur can watch them with me. I couldn’t wait to share that with him so I had to review all the sequences with my wife so it gets approved and now it’s his favorite story as well. I am super proud to share this passion with him. And he only saw one small part of my collection. Edouard is too young to see Star Wars yet but he still has his lightsaber and his Anakin Skywalker costume.

Q: If you could be any Star Wars character, who would it be and why?

Not original here but I would be Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi knight has convictions, plays by the rules, is loyal to the jedi council, tries really hard to be a good teacher, is aware of his limits and remains a threat to the dark side. The coolest character remains Darth Vader though. I wish I could bring balance to the force but I can’t sorry guys.

Antoine Goes to White Castle

Every day in the Financial District, businessmen can be seen carrying briefcases to work. But, last Thursday, vente-privee’s Antoine ventured uptown and returned to the office with a peculiar kind of case: the White Castle “Crave Case.” What occasion warranted this tasty treat? Our weekly all-hands meeting, of course! Every Thursday, a different vp department hosts this company-wide gathering. Creativity is encouraged, and often times refreshments are selected in accordance with a particular theme. With the Fourth of July right around the corner, the CX team chose to spark excitement with a patriotic palette. Some people were thrilled about the White Castle sliders, while others were thankful for the holiday barbecues yet to be had. Nevertheless, everyone had a blast!

vente-privee recently celebrated the birthday of Sydney, one of our Customer Experience whizzes. In the toast that follows - albeit slightly “roasty” - fellow CX extraordinaire Kristen shares her insight into Sydney’s colorful character…

“Sydney is a tiny ball of brightness that radiates from the CX section — on the days she wears her gold sandals and armful of gold bangles, she shines even brighter! Only Sydney could have a man change his commute because she politely declined his invitation to dinner. Only Sydney can remember and answer to all the nicknames she has been given since her first day (i.e., ‘Hey Sydface! Spicy Icy! Sanswering Salls Sydney! SUUUUPIIIII!’). Interested in learning how to make the most delicious smushed bean burrito? Ask Syd for “her” secret recipe. No one is more amazed by time passing than this recent Temple University grad, who often exclaims, ‘Oh my gosh, is it 11 AM already?’. Equal parts talented and fun, Sydney can light up any room.”

And now, a Q&A with the birthday girl herself!

Q: If you could only stock your fridge with one food item for the rest of the year, what would it be?

A: “I’m gonna have to say…I need buffalo sauce. I need it on a lot of things. I definitely need buffalo sauce.”

Q: If you had a soundtrack to your life what would it be?

A: Love Today by Mika

Q: What’s your favorite part about working at vente-privee?

A: “The wonderful people that I work with every day. We have a fabulous time. Everyone is just really thoughtful and caring, and I feel like I’ve made really good friends even though everyone is always working really hard.

Q: Who is your style inspiration?

A: “I’m obsessed with Miroslava Duma, the editor for Harper’s Bazaar in Russia. She’s amazing. Her style is fabulous.”

Q: Who is your favorite Disney princess and why?

“This isn’t a princess but my favorite Disney character is Nala from The Lion King. Why? Because she is a fierce feline. And she is a strong female character in the jungle. If I had to choose a princess it would be Jasmine because she has great fashion sense – love the turquoise – and who wouldn’t want to be swept away on a magic carpet?!”

Q: What is your favorite quote?

A: “‘The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.’ - Coco Chanel”

vp Office Trend of the Week

The à la mode spirit of the brands featured on venteprivee.com is often embraced by our employees through their personal wardrobe choices. Over the past week, some of our employees took the neoteric neon trend into their own hands… and feet. Kick-starting summer with vibrant hues, these mademoiselles brought bursts of brightness from the outdoors into the office.

Ashlee rocked sky-high, neon pink, open-toed stilettos.

Margaux toted a monogrammed neon yellow Cambridge Satchel and matching sandals.

vp Team Members Race for Charity

On venteprivee.com, we take the sweat out of shopping online. But offline, our vente-privee team members will gladly work up a sweat to support a great cause.  Forty of our employees took to the Financial District streets on May 31 to participate in the 5K American Heart Association Wall Street Run and Heart Walk.  The girls traded in their fashionable footwear for equally stylish sneakers, and the guys showed off their newest, and freshest, kicks. Whether they walked, ran, or cheered on their co-workers, our employees  raised approximately $2000 in total. Outstanding job, team!

The participants flaunt their vp pride in matching T-shirts.

Our enthusiastic vp runners prep for the event,  with warm ups ranging from hand signals to hamstring stretches.

A Tribute to vp Dads

From unfettered fashionistas to down-home dads, vente-privee employees are an eclectic crew. This week, in the spirit of Father’s Day, we want to give a special shout out to the vp Dads! They give us their all at work, and as you’re about to find out, never miss the chance to have fun with their kids. Thanks, fellas, for your hard work both in the office and at home!

Nic (our VP Tech) and his kids

Our Director of Recruitment, Drew, has two little recruiters…

Dan—our director of logistics—spends equal time with each of his three sons individually in what they have come to refer to as “special time.” It turns out that their special time requests are often the same, as all 3 boys play lacrosse, football, basketball and most recently, golf. Consequently, Dan gets a triple dose of all four sports in a row. Who needs a gym membership when you have 3 athletic sons?

Hugh, one of our software engineers, also has a son who may be an aspiring athlete. At only 9 months old, he can’t say much, but one of the few things he has said is “Hedo Turkoglu,” the name of an Orlando Magic basketball player from Turkey. Hugh suspects it was unintentional… but was it?!

Next we have another one of our tech guys, Gui, and no, his son is not sprouting antlers. What you see below is the shadow of his son proudly clad in a raccoon hat. Believe it or not, he was only 16 months old when this picture was taken, but his shadow makes him look deceivingly tall. Shadow or no shadow, Gui predicts that his little guy will in fact be taller than him one day.

Chris Hughes, our general counsel, doesn’t question how tall his children will be, as they are already grown. The photograph below shows the beginning of their adventures on their first day of school, taken where the driveway meets the road. Each one has since pursued a unique path of his or her own. Left to right - Anna works in an art gallery in Stamford, Connecticut. Alice just finished her first year of medical school in Philadelphia. Jake teaches English literature at Penn State and, while not busy reading beer bottle labels, is working on his PhD. Julia works for an internet marketing firm in the City, but wants to bartend and write about her experiences. Emily teaches third grade in Westport, Connecticut. By Chris’ recollection, his children were never afraid to go down that road because Mom and Dad were always awaiting their return. To this day, Chris still eagerly anticipates their arrival in the driveway.

Entrepreneurial Leadership

By Christopher Poulos

Here at vpUSA, we highly value a trait we call Entrepreneurial Leadership.  It is one of the hallmarks of our company culture.  Chris Poulos, an Ambassador with an impressive entrepreneurial background, sheds some very eloquent light on what entrepreneurial leadership really is, and what it means to vpUSA employees… Thanks Chris!

As a former small business owner who studied philosophy at the graduate level, I have often wondered about the intersection of entrepreneurship and philosophy.  I’ve found that there are an endless number of marriages between the two.  It’s safe to say that the majority of these unions do not end in divorce, except for those few philosophical husbands (i.e Machiavelli and Hobbes) who on occasion decide to take advantage of their stunning entrepreneurial wives. But let’s stick to the good stuff - the glass half full.  How does the entrepreneurial leader match up with the individual who strives at living the life of excellence?  Metaphorically-speaking, it’s kind of like the scene in I Love You Man, when Paul Rudd and Jason Segel express their deep friendship for one another on the altar.  The match is unmistakeably pure and sealed in some sort of cosmic and somewhat comical fraternity.

Amongst the countless philosophical discussions on the life of excellence, we consistently arrive at poignant, burning questions with no clear answers.  What is the best way to choose? How should I act? How do I think in order to be at my best?  How do I love?  And in my opinion, what should I have for breakfast?  Some think these questions are best understood when embellished by circumstantial context; however, others might say, in reducing these questions to particulars, we lose sight of the beauty of the whole. I would say getting our hands dirty with life’s particulars, while maintaining a clear vision of the big picture is certainly a chapter out of the book of living excellently.  It is a delicate balance that requires a great deal of insight to maintain.

So what? What does this mean for the entrepreneurial leader?  It may simply mean never losing sight of the corporate engine’s moving parts once the car has started. Yet it also means something more.  It requires another level of awareness — not only one that delves into the nuts and bolts or one that remains focused on the larger picture.  It is an awareness of the whole, its particulars, and a conscious awareness of the awareness of all these former elements.  Analogically, it is a deeply-rooted understanding that the car is running — thus ultimately knowing how well it is functioning by constantly being aware of all its contextual elements, large and small.  It’s not merely knowing how all the car parts are integrated, but also having the necessary focus to know how the car should run when it is operating at its best — and knowing if and when the car is due for a tune up.  The hard part is keeping it all on one’s mind all the time — being aware of the awareness.  We’re talking a dream within a dream people (Inception reference anybody?).

One of the most interesting contemporary philosophers, Anthony De Mello once wrote, “It isn’t falling in the river that causes you to drown; it’s staying in.”  To the entrepreneurial leader, and to the philosopher, self-awareness is key.  Falling doesn’t necessitate drowning, just as setbacks do not necessitate major downfall.  Knowing the difference is quite beneficial.  As Captain Planet would say, “The power is yours!”

Okay, so this philosophical awareness thing — this openness to higher levels of understanding, whether considering particular or larger contexts sounds pretty important to the entrepreneurial leader.  How does one hone the skill?  Where’s the how to book?  If entrepreneurial leadership of this sort came in book form everyone would have a copy.  But even if it did, not everyone would understand how difficult of a learning process it entails.

For starters the philosophical leader looks to others in society for ethical and political guidance.  Aristotle made it clear in his works that virtue is a mean between excess and deficiency, and in consistently choosing that mean, one would be considered one of the great individuals in society.  But, learning that decision that ought to be consistently made meant looking to elders as role models and surrounding oneself with individuals who sought after the same goal.  Similarly, aspiring entrepreneurial leaders find themselves reading books and watching videos of the great entrepreneurs of our time to learn more about how they thought — how they became aware of the world both small and large through the many questions which kept them awake at night.  Thus, good entrepreneurial leadership, just like good ethics and/or philosophical awareness, takes lots and lots of practice and constant reminding.

Lastly, acting as the entrepreneurial leader requires inspiring others to lead in a similar fashion.  I will end on a pithy parable from De Mello:

Said the governor, “Is there any advice you can give me in the exercise of my office?”
“Yes.  Learn how to give orders.”
“Why?”
“So that others can receive them without feeling inferior,” said the Master.

Constant awareness, and practice, practice, practice…
